ELT365 · Day 209 — Academic Writing at B2+

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Academic writing requires formal register, hedging, evidence-based claims, and explicit structure. Teaching it begins with register awareness, not essay format.

Example — ‘It seems likely that…’ hedges. ‘The data suggests…’ is evidential. ‘This essay will argue…’ is structural. All three must be taught explicitly.

Try — Take a learner paragraph at B2. Ask them to add one hedge, one evidential phrase, and one linking sentence. Compare before and after.
