ELT365 · Day 157 — Inferring meaning while listening

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Speakers leave a lot unsaid; listeners infer attitude, relationship and intention from tone, stress and context. This sub-skill is often neglected but central to real understanding.

Example — "Lovely. Just lovely." said flatly signals sarcasm, not praise — meaning carried by intonation, not words.

Try — Find a line in an audio where tone changes meaning. Ask learners: how does the speaker feel, and which sound told you?
