ELT365 · Day 207 — Pronunciation in productive work — what to teach

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Do not teach every pronunciation point — teach the ones that affect intelligibility. Word stress, sentence stress, and key sounds cause most misunderstandings.

Example — Stress shift changes meaning: ‘REcord’ (noun) vs ‘re-CORD’ (verb). This is worth teaching. The precise quality of every vowel is not.

Try — In your next speaking activity, listen for one recurring pronunciation error across the class. Teach that one point in the feedback slot.
