ELT365 · Day 156 — Listening for detail

June 23, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Intensive or detailed listening targets precise meaning — exact words, grammar, attitude. It is demanding, so it usually comes last, after gist and specific-information stages have built confidence.

Example — Distinguishing "I can" from "I can't" relies on the weak vowel and final /t/ — detail work, not gist.

Try — Pick one tricky moment in your audio. Write a question that only careful, repeated listening can answer, and signpost that learners may need two plays.
