In natural speech, native speakers do not pronounce each word separately. They connect, reduce, and modify sounds to speak faster and more efficiently. This is called connected speech. There are four main features:

Native speakers link, reduce, and swallow sounds in ways that standard pronunciation syllabi don’t cover. Learners trained only on careful speech are unprepared for real connected speech.
In natural speech, content words carry stress and are clear; function words — articles, auxiliaries, prepositions — are reduced to weak forms. Learners who do not know this miss them completely.
Connected speech — assimilation, elision, linking, weak forms — makes native-speed English sound unlike the written form. Learners who know the words still cannot parse the stream.
