The Schwa: The Most Common Sound in English (B1)

πŸŽ™ From the classroom: No one taught me the schwa in Bangladesh. I spoke each syllable clearly and equally β€” like reading out loud. In Sydney, people couldn’t understand me. Not because I didn’t know words. Because I didn’t know that most English vowels in unstressed syllables are swallowed into one neutral sound.

πŸ’‘ The Idea

The schwa (Ι™) is the most common vowel sound in English. It sounds like a very short, relaxed ‘uh’. Every vowel letter can produce a schwa in an unstressed syllable. Natural, fast English is full of schwas β€” they make speech sound relaxed and fluent, not robotic.

πŸ—£ Example

πŸ”ˆ The schwa in action:
‘a’ in about β†’ Ι™BOUT
‘e’ in problem β†’ PROBlΙ™m
‘o’ in today β†’ tΙ™DAY
‘er’ in teacher β†’ TEACHΙ™r
Sentence: A teacher of English β†’ Ι™ TEACHΙ™r Ι™v ENGlish (three schwas!)

🎯 Try It Now!

Say each word below. Underline the syllable with the schwa sound:

support    banana    lesson    computer    around    camera

Then say: ‘A teacher at a camera lesson.’ Count the schwa sounds.
