ELT365 · Day 179 — Connected Speech and Listening
Idea — Native speakers link, reduce, and swallow sounds in ways that standard pronunciation syllabi don’t cover. Learners trained only on careful speech are unprepared for real connected speech.
Example — ‘What are you going to do?’ becomes ‘Whaddya gonna do?’ in fast speech. Learners who have never encountered this pattern will hear a different sentence entirely.
Try — Take one sentence from an authentic audio source. Transcribe it as it actually sounds (not as it would be written). Teach learners to identify the connections.
