ELT365 · Day 209 — Integrating skills — speaking leads to writing

Idea — Skills rarely operate in isolation in the real world. Lessons that move from speaking to writing (or reading to speaking) better reflect authentic language use and give learners content and language for the next stage.

Example — Learners discuss opinions on remote working (speaking). Notes from the discussion become the plan for a written argument (writing). The speaking generated content; the writing organised it.

Try — Chain two skills in your next lesson: a 5-minute speaking task feeds directly into a 10-minute writing task on the same topic. Compare the writing quality to standalone tasks.
