ELT365 · Day 175 — Inferring meaning from context
Idea — Guessing unknown words from context is a core reading strategy. Teach learners to use part of speech, surrounding sentence, and topic before reaching for a dictionary.
Example — “The hidalgo strode into the room, his cloak billowing.” Hidalgo is a person — male, formal, historical. Enough meaning to continue reading.
Try — Blank out five words from a paragraph. Learners guess from context, then check. Discuss how they guessed each word.
