ELT365 · Day 206 — Business English — email register

July 5, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Register in professional writing means matching tone to the relationship and purpose: formal, semi-formal, or informal. Wrong register signals cultural mismatch, not just grammar error.

Example — “Per my last email…” reads as passive-aggressive in many professional cultures. “As I mentioned on Monday…” achieves the same reference with a neutral tone.

Try — Give learners three versions of the same email at different register levels. They decide which to send and to whom, then justify the choice.
