ELT365 · Day 186 — Free practice: opening the gate

June 24, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Free practice sets a communicative task where learners choose their own language. The teacher monitors but does not intervene. The aim is fluency and consolidation.

Example — After a lesson on giving advice, learners discuss a realistic dilemma in pairs: ‘My neighbour plays music at 2 a.m. What should I do?’ They may or may not use ‘you should’ — that is fine.

Try — Design a two-minute free practice task for a language point you recently taught. Ensure the task works even if learners avoid the target structure.
