Idea — Controlled practice gives learners little freedom — they produce a specific form in a predictable context. It belongs right after presentation: build accuracy before you open the task.

Example — After presenting reported speech, learners complete sentences: ‘She said she ___.’ They choose the right verb form. Controlled — the target structure is the only variable.

Try — Write one controlled practice sentence for a grammar point you are teaching this week. Check: is the target structure the only decision the learner makes?
