ELT365 · Day 182 — What ‘productive’ means: speaking and writing

Idea — Productive skills are speaking and writing — skills where learners generate language rather than receive it. They require learners to retrieve, organise, and produce form and meaning simultaneously.

Example — A learner answers an email in English: she chooses vocabulary, applies grammar, and structures her argument. All three at once — that is the productive challenge.

Try — List one speaking task and one writing task you have used this month. For each, note what learners had to do simultaneously: grammar, vocabulary, organisation, audience awareness.
