ELT365 · D158 — Pre-Listening: Why You Warm the Brain First

July 13, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — A brief pre-task activates schema, pre-teaches blocking vocabulary, and gives learners a reason to listen. Skip it and learners start behind.

Example — Show the photo from a news story. Ask: who, where, what? This 90-second activity doubles comprehension before a word is played.

Try — Design one pre-listening task for a recording you use. It must: (1) last under three minutes, (2) not reveal the answer to the gist question.
