ELT365 · Day 156 — Listening for Detail: When Every Word Counts
Idea — Detailed listening targets specific data — a number, a name, a date, an exact instruction. It works best after a gist pass has oriented the listener; use it for the details, not as a first pass.
Example — After learners report that a short talk is about a volcano, ask: “In which year did the eruption happen, and how many people were affected?” The second question is detail; the first was gist.
Try — Play a 30-second news clip. Give one detail question only. Anyone who rewinds the whole clip has treated it as intensive reading, not listening.
