Idea — Scanning is searching, not reading. The eyes race for a target — a name, a number, a station — and everything else stays unread until the target is found.
Example — “When is the 14:00 train to Lyon?” The eyes fly down the departure column, skipping dates and platforms, and stop at Lyon. Only then does reading begin.
Try — Hand learners a TV guide and one question: “What time is the news on Channel 2?” One minute, whole class. Anyone reading whole rows has missed the skill.
