ELT365 · Day 163 — Scanning: reading to find one thing

Idea — Scanning a reading text means searching for one target and ignoring the rest. The skill is speed plus selectivity, not comprehension of every sentence.

Example — In a short article, the reader is asked only for the date of an event. The eyes move until that date appears; surrounding sentences stay unread.

Try — Give learners a page and one question: “What year is mentioned?” Time them. Anyone reading full paragraphs has left scanning behind.
