A clear structure lets your data speak.

Signposting language

• Opening: “I would like to walk you through our main findings today.”
• Moving on: “Turning now to…” · “This brings me to…”
• Emphasising: “The key point here is…” · “What this shows is…”
• Summarising: “In summary…” · “To wrap up…”
• Questions: “I am happy to take questions now.”

The three-part structure

1. Tell them what you will tell them (overview)
2. Tell them (the data or findings)
3. Tell them what you told them (summary and implications)

Common mistakes

• Reading directly from slides — the slides support you, not replace you
• Too much detail, too little signposting
• No clear “So what?” at the end

Practice

Prepare a 2-minute verbal presentation of any data you know. Use at least 4 signposting phrases. Record yourself and listen back.
