M10 — Teach online and with low bandwidth

Teach online and with low bandwidth

Module outcome: preserve the objective across delivery formats. Text-first design, media chosen for purpose, one master unit instead of duplicated copies, and access tested with people before any conformance is claimed.

Prerequisite: a lesson or unit from M02 onward to convert. Planned module budget: about 16 of the 200 activity hours. Built today: nothing complete. All four units are specifications.

M10-U01 · Build a chunk

Specification. The unit page does not exist yet.

Planned content: package one meaningful decision with input, action and feedback; do not cut sentences merely to fit a timer. Evidence to keep: a complete learning page in semantic HTML.

M10-U02 · Select media

Specification. The unit page does not exist yet.

Planned content: video for demonstration, text for reading, audio for listening, with an equivalent route where appropriate. Evidence to keep: a media-choice justification, and an image, transcript and print plan.

M10-U03 · Publish without duplication

Specification. The unit page does not exist yet.

Planned content: maintain one master unit; generate web, PDF and channel drafts with matching versions. Evidence to keep: a traceable release, a manifest and a link check.

M10-U04 · Test access

Specification. The unit page does not exist yet.

Planned content: check keyboard operation, reflow, contrast and downloads; test with people before claiming conformance. Evidence to keep: an accessibility issue log and a mobile, desktop and print test sheet.

Game · Voice-only barrier game

Pairs, two simple workplace diagrams, 10 minutes, zero bandwidth. One learner holds a diagram: a room layout, a weekly schedule, a seating plan. The pair sits back to back, or takes a plain phone call with screens off. The describer has 90 seconds; the drawer may ask exactly two questions. Compare, then swap with the second diagram.

Trainee note: this runs on any phone with no video, no screen sharing and no data. It also fails informatively. Every breakdown point shows what a low-bandwidth lesson must carry in words alone, which is the U01 and U02 design lesson: if the voice route cannot carry it, the text route must, and the print route must carry what both lose.

Format adapted from describe-and-draw activities in Five-Minute Activities (Penny Ur and Andrew Wright).

The phone call is the real lesson.

Play it now: barrier board

You are the drawer. Your partner is on the phone describing an office room: six items, one deliberately ambiguous sentence each. Place each item where the words tell you it goes. You have a two-question budget for the whole call. When the board is full, the reveal shows the real room and your breakdown: which descriptions were ambiguous, and what a better sentence would have been. No timer; the call is the lesson.

The paired classroom version with two boards is above.

How to work through this module

No built units yet. Use the specifications as your delivery checklist: one decision per chunk, media chosen for purpose, one master copy of everything you publish, and a test with a person before any accessibility claim.
