Vocabulary + Grammar
📖 From My Life

When I arrived in Australia, explaining my family was surprisingly hard. In Bengali, we have a specific word for your father’s older brother (জেঠা — jetha) that’s completely different from your mother’s brother (মামা — mama). In English? They’re both just “uncle.” Simpler in some ways — different in others.

🎯 Language Focus

Core family mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter
Extended grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt, cousin, nephew, niece
Possessive my mother / her brother / his sister
Grammar Subject + is + family member → “She is my aunt.”

✏️ Quick Practice — Try It!

1. Fill in: He is my mother’s father. He is my ___.

Grandfather ✓.
2. Correct the error: “She are my sister.”

She is my sister ✓ (singular → is).
3. What do you call your father’s sister?

Aunt ✓.
4. Write one sentence: describe someone in your family.

e.g. “My brother is tall and funny.” — your answer!.

👶 For Young Learners

🏠 Draw your family tree! Write each person’s English name (mum, dad, grandma…). Show it to your family and teach them their English names!

💡 Your 5-Minute Takeaway

He/She IS — never “he are.” In English, every singular person uses “is.” This one rule covers hundreds of sentences.
