If I’d Never Left Bangladesh
There’s a version of me that never boarded that plane to Sydney in 2005. I think about him sometimes. He probably speaks only Bengali. He never learned to run a restaurant floor. He never met Vanessa. In English, we call this the second conditional: imagining a different present from a different past.
The second conditional imagines unlikely or hypothetical situations in the present.
Form: If + past simple, would + base verb
If I lived in Bangladesh, I would speak more Bengali.
If she were a teacher, she would understand this better.
What would you do if you had a year off?
1. If I didn’t speak French, life in Réunion would be much harder.
2. If she were here now, she would tell you herself.
3. What would you do if you found a wallet in the street?
Second Conditional Quiz
1. Complete: If I ___ (be) taller, I ___ (play) basketball. were / would play
2. What’s the mistake? ‘If I would have money, I would travel.’ ‘If I would have’ is wrong. Use: ‘If I had money, I would travel.’
3. Is ‘If I win the lottery, I will buy a house’ second conditional? No — that’s first conditional (possible/likely). Second conditional uses past simple: ‘If I won…’
