Hedging Language — Being Diplomatically Precise | Business English B2

July 10, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Hedging lets you be less direct without being dishonest.

It signals uncertainty, softens strong claims, and shows professional or academic caution.

Modal verbs

  • “This could indicate…”
  • “It may be that…”
  • “The results might suggest…”

Adverbs

Possibly · probably · seemingly · arguably · apparently

Reporting verbs

  • “It appears that…” · “It seems as though…” · “Research suggests…”

Distancing phrases

  • “To some extent…” · “In many cases…” · “It could be argued that…”

When NOT to hedge

When you need to be directive: “You must submit this by Friday.” Not: “You might want to consider submitting this by Friday.”

Practice

Rewrite with appropriate hedging:
1. “The new system will increase productivity by 30%.”
2. “The problem is caused by poor communication.”
