ELT365 · Day 200 — Register — formal vs informal writing

June 30, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Register means the level of formality in language. Learners need to recognise and produce the right register: texting a friend is not the same as writing to a bank.

Example — ‘Hey, can you send me that thing?’ vs ‘I am writing to request the document discussed in our meeting of 10 June.’

Try — Give learners the same message in two registers. Ask: which is more appropriate in each situation and why?
