Idea — A role play gives learners a situation, a role, and a communicative aim. Setting it up takes longer than running it. Clear instructions (who, where, what you want) and a brief preparation time produce better language.
Example — Situation: a hotel check-in. Student A: guest with a booking problem. Student B: receptionist. Aim: resolve the problem. Preparation: 2 minutes to note what you’ll say.
Try — Write role-play cards for a situation your class knows. Include: role + situation + one aim. No more than three sentences per card. Run it, then debrief language, not just content.
