ELT365 · Day 173 — Gist reading — skimming and scanning
Idea — Skimming = read fast for the general idea. Scanning = search for one specific item. Both require learners to ignore most of the text — that is the skill, not a shortcut.
Example — Skimming: “What is this article mainly about?” Scanning: “Find the date the law was passed.”
Try — Set a 90-second skimming task before any detailed reading this week. Time it strictly.
