ELT365 · Day 210 — Assessing mixed-ability classes fairly

July 6, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Standardised tests measure all learners against the same benchmark. In mixed-ability classes, progress-based assessment — measuring individual gain — is more motivating and more honest.

Example — A learner who moves from A1 to A2 in one term has made outstanding progress, even if the class average is B1. Document that gain explicitly.

Try — Write one progress-based feedback comment per learner this week, focused on what each can do now that they could not do one month ago.
