Idea — A text is appropriately graded when learners understand roughly 95% of the words — enough challenge without overload. Below that threshold, learners stop reading for meaning.

Example — Nation’s vocabulary research suggests one unknown word per 100 known words for fluency reading; up to five per 100 for vocabulary growth.

Try — Count unknown words in a text you plan to use. Is it within the 95% comprehensible zone?
