ELT365 · Day 172 — Text type and genre awareness
Idea — Different text types follow different conventions. A recipe has imperatives and ingredients lists. A formal letter has a salutation and sign-off. Teaching genre awareness helps learners navigate real texts faster.
Example — A student who recognises an opinion column expects the writer to take a side, use hedging language, and anticipate counter-arguments — before reading a word.
Try — Give learners the first two lines of three different text types. Ask them to identify the type and predict what comes next. Discuss the clues they used.
