Idea — While-reading tasks should guide learners through the text, not test them after the fact. The task shapes what they notice and how deeply they process.
Example — Learners read and underline every phrase that expresses the writer’s opinion. They don’t answer comprehension questions — they annotate. The annotation is the task.
Try — Design a while-reading task that uses annotation, ordering, or matching rather than traditional questions. Notice whether it changes how carefully learners read.
