ELT365 · Day 165 — Listening Sub-Skills

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Listening is not one skill but a cluster: global comprehension, local detail, inference, deduction, attitude recognition. Good tasks target one sub-skill explicitly.

Example — ‘Understanding the speaker’s attitude’ is a sub-skill. Teaching it means tasks that require attitude recognition — not just fact retrieval.

Try — Choose a recording you use. Identify which sub-skill your usual task targets. Write a second task targeting a different sub-skill from the same audio.
