ELT365 · Day 165 — Gist Tasks: One Question, Whole Text

Idea — A gist task gives learners one reason to process the whole text — not individual facts. It trains tolerance of ambiguity and listening for direction.

Example — “Is this conversation formal or informal?” cannot be answered from one sentence; learners must attend to the whole to decide.

Try — Write a gist question for a text you use regularly. Test it: can it be answered without hearing or reading past the first sentence? If yes, rewrite it.
