ELT365 · Day 156 — The Gist Task

July 15, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — The gist task sets one global question, answered by reading or listening to the whole text once. It trains reading-for-the-main-idea, not detail.

Example — ‘What is the writer’s main opinion?’ is a gist task. ‘What time did the train leave?’ is not.

Try — Write one gist question for a text you already use. It should be answerable in one sentence or fewer.
