Idea — Controlled practice keeps language use tightly constrained — learners produce target forms with minimal creative choice. It builds form confidence before fluency work.

Example — Substitution drills, prompt-and-response, and dialogue repetition with one variable changed are all controlled. Learners can fail or succeed on the target item only.

Try — Design a two-minute controlled speaking activity for ‘used to + verb.’ What is the single decision learners make each turn?
