ELT365 · Day 179 — Choosing the right sub-skill for your lesson aim

Idea — Match the sub-skill to the aim. A lesson on scanning should not start with an intensive comprehension task — that is a different skill entirely.

Example — Aim: ‘Learners can locate specific data in a table.’ Sub-skill: scanning. Task: find three figures in the table without reading the surrounding text. The aim drives the task.

Try — Write your lesson aim for tomorrow’s reading lesson. Then ask: what sub-skill does that aim require? Is your main task actually practising that sub-skill? Adjust if not.
