ELT365 · Day 162 — The listen-and-repeat trap

July 4, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Drilling isolated sentences builds pronunciation patterns but not real listening. Learners who only ever repeat a model cannot handle unpredictable connected speech.

Example — A learner drills “Can I help you?” perfectly, then cannot parse “Cannahelp cha?” from a fast American cashier.

Try — Add one unpredictable spontaneous question to any drilling activity this week. Note what happens.
