ELT365 · Day 153 — The Text Is Not the Task

July 18, 2026 · Sourov · 1 min read

Idea — Comprehension of a listening text and completion of a task are different things. Learners can score poorly on a task even when they understood the recording — because the task was badly designed.

Example — A learner answers ‘true/false’ by guessing from key words, not from understanding. The task measured test-taking, not listening.

Try — Review your next listening task before class. Ask: could a learner get full marks without actually understanding the text? If yes, redesign.
