ELT365 · Day 152 — Gist vs Detail: the Two Listening Modes

📚60-Day ELT Masterclass — This post is part of an ongoing series. View full index →

Idea — Every listening task needs a purpose. Gist tasks ask learners to get the overall message; detail tasks ask them to locate specific information. Mixing them up in the same task kills both.

Example — Play a news clip. Gist task: what is the topic? Detail task (second listen): what three facts does the speaker give?

Try — Take a listening you use regularly. Write one gist question and one detail question. Run them as separate listens next lesson.
