Coffee Talk: Vocabulary from Behind the Espresso Machine
Coffee Talk: Vocabulary from Behind the Espresso Machine
My first week at a Sydney café, a customer asked for a ‘flat white’. I nodded. Then I stared at the machine for a full minute with no idea what to do. The other barista leaned over and said, ‘double shot, steamed milk, no foam.’ That was my first real English lesson.
- Name six types of coffee drink in English
- Use adjectives to describe taste
- Give a simple café order
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| espresso | strong, small coffee | One espresso, please. |
| steamed milk | hot milk with bubbles | A latte has steamed milk. |
| foam | thick, airy milk on top | A cappuccino has lots of foam. |
| shot | one measure of espresso | Double shot means two shots. |
| bitter / sweet / smooth | taste adjectives | This coffee is bitter. |
🧠 Grammar focus: countable vs uncountable
We say a coffee (one cup = countable) but some milk (liquid = uncountable).
❌ I want a milk. ✅ I want some milk.
❌ Two coffees please… or is it OK? — Yes! In a café, we count cups, so two coffees ✅
Write your order: I would like a ____. It is ____ (sweet/bitter/smooth). I also want some ____.
Share with a partner or write it in your notebook.
Presentation: show a real or drawn coffee menu. Practice: drill the order phrase chorally. Production: student orders, partner plays barista. Total time: 5 minutes — tight but complete.
