Hedging lets you be less direct without being dishonest.

It signals uncertainty, softens strong claims, and shows professional or academic caution.

Modal verbs

When NOT to hedge

When you need to be directive: “You must submit this by Friday.” Not: “You might want to consider submitting this by Friday.”
