ELT365 · Day 158 — Scanning — finding specific information fast

Idea — Scanning is a search, not a reading. The eyes move quickly to locate one target — a name, a number, a time — and ignore everything else until that target appears.

Example — Looking for the 09:15 train on a timetable: the eyes run down the departure column and stop at the matching time. Platforms and destinations stay unread until needed.

Try — Give learners a menu and one question: “How much is the soup?” Time them. Anyone reading full descriptions has switched to intensive reading.
