YL · Teaching Young Learners: What’s Different

Idea — Young learners (ages 6–12) learn language differently from adults: they respond to movement, repetition, and context rather than explanation. Grammar rules taught explicitly rarely stick; language embedded in a game or story often does.

Example — An adult learner can hold the rule ‘use ‘have got’ for possession’ in working memory. A 7-year-old learns ‘I’ve got a dog’ by saying it twenty times while showing a picture card.

Try — Plan one activity for young learners this week that uses movement, a game, or a story to convey meaning. No rule explanation. Notice whether the language sticks.
