YL · Songs and Chants in the Young Learner Classroom

Idea — Songs and chants are not just warm-up activities. Rhythm and repetition are among the most powerful mechanisms for language memorisation at any age, but especially for young learners.

Example — A days-of-the-week chant teaches vocabulary, sequencing, and pronunciation simultaneously. Learners who cannot write the words can sing them correctly after three repetitions.

Try — Choose one target vocabulary set for your next YL lesson. Write a four-line chant using those words with a clear beat. Practise it yourself before class.
