YL · Games That Teach Grammar to Kids

Idea — Grammar games work because they create a need to use target structures to play. The game is the production task; the grammar is the tool learners use to participate.

Example — ‘Guess what’s in my bag’ generates ‘Is it a…?’/‘Have you got a…?’ naturally. ‘Simon says’ practises imperatives. The game creates the communicative context; the teacher doesn’t need to explain the rule.

Try — Choose one grammar point for your next YL class. Find or adapt one game where learners must use that structure to play. Run the game first, then name the language afterwards.
