YL · Assessment with Young Learners

Idea — Written tests rarely reflect what young learners know because they conflate language ability with writing ability. Observation, game performance, and oral tasks give a truer picture.

Example — While learners play a vocabulary game, note which children use the target words correctly and which rely on pointing or L1. That observation is your assessment data.

Try — In your next YL lesson, observe three specific learners and note one thing each can do with English that they couldn’t do last month. That is your assessment record.
