The Waiter’s Guide to Small Talk

📖 From my experience:
I waited tables at Popolo and Zorba for years. Small talk was mandatory — not optional. ‘How was your day?’ is not a real question. It’s a social ritual. But it opens every professional interaction. If you can do it naturally, every door opens a little wider. I taught myself small talk the same way I learned wine: by doing it 180 times a shift.
🎯 Language focus:
Small talk = short, light conversation about non-controversial topics (weather, weekend plans, food, travel).

Opener → Reply → Question back

A: 'Nice weather today, isn't it?' → ritual opener
B: 'It really is! I was thinking of taking a walk.' → brief response
A: 'Oh, do you live nearby?' → question to keep it going

Small talk starters:
🌤 Weather: “Lovely day, isn’t it?” / “It’s been freezing lately!”
📅 Plans: “Any plans for the weekend?” / “Did you do anything nice?”
🍽 Food: “Have you tried the new café on the corner?”
✈ Travel: “Have you been anywhere nice recently?”

Small talk practice

1. What topics should you AVOID in small talk with strangers? Politics, religion, money, personal health problems, relationship issues.

2. Why is ‘How are you?’ often not a real question? It’s a social ritual — the expected answer is ‘Fine, thanks’ not an honest health update.

3. What’s the rule after someone answers your question? Ask a follow-up OR share something related about yourself — keep the exchange balanced.

🧒 For younger learners: Play ‘Party animals’ — kids move around the room with name badges and have to speak to five new ‘guests’ in 5 minutes using only starter questions.
👩‍🏫 Cambridge CELTA note: Speaking fluency (small talk/socialising) is A2–B1 Cambridge content. Use TBL: set up a roleplay first (airport, office, party) — students do it, notice the gaps, then learn the phrases, then re-do it with language. STT must exceed TTT in speaking lessons.
