The Menu as a Text — Skim and Scan

📖 From my experience:
At Uccello in Sydney (an Italian rooftop restaurant) I memorised the menu. Not every word — I could find what I needed in seconds. ‘Is there something vegetarian?’ Scan. ‘What’s the theme of this menu?’ Skim. Reading in real life is always one of these two modes. Rarely both at once.

🎯 Language focus:
Skimming = reading quickly for the main idea (gist).
Scanning = searching for specific information (a name, date, number).

We never read everything at the same speed. The skill is knowing which mode to use.

Skim: 'What kind of article is this?' (30 seconds, don't read every word) Scan: 'What time does the restaurant open?' (find the number, ignore the rest)

✅ Task: You have 20 seconds to read a newspaper front page.
1. Skim task: What are the three main topics? (don’t read every word)
2. Scan task: Find the journalist’s name in the byline.
→ Notice: different speed, different eye movement, different goal.

Skim or Scan?

1. You need to find the price of a product in a catalogue. Scan — you’re looking for a specific piece of information.

2. You want to know if a book is interesting before buying it. Skim — you want the general idea / gist.

3. What order do you usually do these in a reading lesson? Skim first (gist task) → then scan (specific information task) — this mirrors real reading.

🧒 For younger learners: Give kids a ‘treasure map’ text and ask them to find a hidden word in 10 seconds. That’s scanning — and they love it.

👩‍🏫 Cambridge CELTA note: Receptive skills (reading) is a major CELTA topic. The correct lesson sequence: gist task first (skim), then detail task (scan). Never set a detailed task before students have the overall picture. Pre-teach only blocking vocabulary — words that stop meaning, not every new word.
