📖 From My Life

In hospitality, I read dozens of documents a day: reservation sheets, supplier invoices, health and safety reports, guest feedback forms. You can’t read them all word by word. You learn to skim (get the main idea fast), scan (find a specific piece of information), and only read closely when it really matters.

🎯 Language Focus

Skimming Read quickly for the main idea. Don’t stop at unknown words.
Scanning Search for a specific word/number. Like Ctrl+F on paper.
Intensive reading Slow, careful reading. Every word matters. For contracts, instructions.
IELTS application Gist = first read of passage. Scanning = finding answers to specific questions.

✏️ Quick Practice — Try It!

1. Which skill? You want to know the TOPIC of an article in 30 seconds.

Skimming ✓.
2. Which skill? You need to find the date of an event in a long report.

Scanning ✓.
3. Which skill? You are reading a contract before signing.

Intensive reading ✓.
4. Look at any paragraph from a book or article. Skim it in 20 seconds. What is the topic?

Your answer!.

💡 Your 5-Minute Takeaway

In IELTS reading, always skim the whole passage first (30 seconds), then scan for answers. Never read everything word by word — you’ll run out of time.
