Professional English · Lesson 09 — Email Tone — Match the Register to the Relationship
Tone in emails is set by vocabulary and sentence length. Formal: long sentences, full words, no contractions. Informal: shorter, direct, contractions allowed.
Examples
- Formal: ‘I would be grateful if you could advise me on the following matter.’
- Neutral: ‘Could you help me with this?’
Practice
Write the same email request in two registers: formal and neutral. Send the appropriate one. When in doubt, go one notch more formal.
Takeaway: Register is not politeness — it is appropriacy. Match it to the reader.
