Present Perfect: Connecting Past to Now (B1)
🎙 From the classroom: After years in Sydney, I moved to France, then Réunion. I now speak four languages. The Present Perfect captures all of that in one tense: ‘I have lived on three continents.’ It’s the tense of accumulated life experience — and the hardest for learners to feel.
💡 The Idea
The Present Perfect (have/has + past participle) connects the past to the present. Use it for: (1) experiences in your life (no specific time), (2) recent events affecting now, (3) unfinished situations (with for/since). It is NOT for completed events with a specific past time.
🗣 Example
✅ Experience: I have lived in four countries.
✅ Recent: She has just finished her exam.
✅ Unfinished: He has taught English for five years.
❌ Specific past: ~~I have arrived in Sydney in 2005.~~ → I arrived in Sydney in 2005.
