LLFE-T05 Β· The Lead-In β Setting Context Before Language
π₯ The Lead-In
β± 5 minutes Β· π CELTA methodology Β· π« Micro-lesson
π From the teacher’s desk: In hospitality, we always briefed the team before service β setting the scene, building anticipation, making everyone feel ready. The classroom lead-in does exactly the same thing. When I first taught at ELT Hub in Brittany, I sometimes skipped it to save time. My CELTA feedback was consistent: without a good lead-in, the lesson never quite ignites.
π― By the end of this micro-lesson, you can: design and deliver an effective lead-in that sets context and engages learners before a language task.
π₯ What Is a Lead-In? (1 min)
A lead-in is the brief activity at the START of a lesson (or before a new task) that:
β
Activates background knowledge (schemata)
β
Creates genuine interest / motivation
β
Sets the context for the language
β
Takes 2β5 minutes maximum
π Types of Lead-In (2 min)
| Type | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Image/Picture | Show image, ask “What do you see? What do you think?” | Any text or listening |
| Question | Open discussion Q related to topic | Speaking/reading |
| Prediction | “What do you think this text/recording is about?” | Listening/reading |
| Anecdote | Teacher tells a short personal story β students respond | Any topic |
| Problem/Statement | “True or false: coffee makes you more creative.” β discuss | Reading/discussion |
βοΈ Practice (2 min)
Design a lead-in for each of these lessons:
- A reading text about remote work and its effect on mental health.
- A grammar lesson on the second conditional (imaginary situations).
- A vocabulary lesson about food and cooking.
State: the TYPE of lead-in, and the exact question/instruction you would give learners.
ποΈ Answer Key
- Question: “Do you think you’re more or less productive working from home? Why? Discuss with a partner.” (2 min)
- Problem/Statement: “If you had 1 million euros and didn’t have to work, what would you do? Tell your partner.” (sets unreal conditional context)
- Anecdote: Teacher describes cooking a disaster meal and asks: “Has a recipe ever gone wrong for you? What happened?”
